    Smile Heart of the Matter!

Hi, everyone! I'm dying to know some expressions you can use when people around you are talking about a problem but you feel that they are avoiding or missing the heart of the matter. I feel that "about" has this connotation of "anything but" (related but not really on), so I think I can start with:
"We've been talking about this for hours . . .

Any suggestions for completing the sentence I started? Or you could start your own. Thanks in advance!

    Re: Heart of the Matter!

***Neither a teacher nor a native speaker.***

We've been talking about this for hours but we haven't found the heart of the matter yet.
We've been talking about this for hours yet we still haven't focused on the main problem.
We've been talking about this for hours but the heart of the matter is still missing.

Is there a meaningful version for you?
Of course anything can be changed or replaced with other words.

    Cheers!

Thank you for your suggestions. I realize that I was thinking more along the line of "beating around the bush."
