    "To lick something" can have the meaning "to beat something, to conquer something".

    Example: Manchester United, having been well and truly licked by arch-rivals Liverpool last weekend, are looking for a full five points from today's game.

    It's a colloquial term, and perhaps a little old-fashioned.
