    one-third less...confused...

"Compared with steel, pure aluminum weighs about one-third less."

I know aluminum weighs less than steel (when they are in the same volume), but according to the sentence, it's less than one-third of the weight of steel or it's two-thirds of that?

    Please help, I'm totally confused.

The comparison is the weighing, so I'd say either 'Compared with steel, pure aluminum is about one-third less heavy' or just 'Pure aluminum weighs about one-third less than steel'.

PS I'm afraid I have to disagree with the 'two-thirds of steel' version. Of? Of what? - two-thirds of steel's weight/two-thirds of the weight of steel/two-thirds as much as steel... Or even 'Aluminum's weight is two-thirds that of steel/two-thirds of steel's.

If we Google the densities of the materials, we find aluminum at 2.7 g/cm^2 and an average steel at 7.9.

This gives you aluminum at about 1/3 the density of steel.
