    social equals of prostitutes

It is by no accident that the Romans ranked actors as the social equals of prostitutes. One sells their body, the other sells their soul. The two things are not so different.

Hi, what does "social equals of prostitutes" mean? Thanks

    Re: social equals of prostitutes

'Social equal' = persons of equivalent status in society; 'equal' here is a noun. A person has 'inferiors', 'equals' and 'betters'.
