    confusing

    Hi, there
Please help me. I am not sure if it is true that " What is it?" can't be written as " What's it?" I just read a book in which the writer mentions that. I feel confused. Can any teachers tell me if the wirter is right? Thanks!

If you are suggesting/questioning that they can be used synonymously, in that sense, the answer would be "no". It would help however if you presented some examples in context. For example, if speaker A. said, "John, I bought you a present." And speaker B. responded, "What is it?" That would be OK, but you would not expect speaker B. to respond, "What's it?".

On the other hand, if speaker A. made the same comment as above, speaker B. could respond, "What's (what is) it for, my birthday is next month" or "What's (what does) it look like?" So, in summary, the "What's it" phrase could/should be followed by a preposition or a verb.
