    at one's feet; set

    Dear teachers,

    I have two questions:

    No.1
They loved to sit ______ his feet while he wove a spell of enchantment and wonder.

    a. at b. around
The key is "a", no problem. Could you please explain why "b" isn't correct?

    No.2
Her mother would be coming in soon, and would expect to find the potatoes peeled and the table laid.
Can I replace "laid" with set?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Thank you in advance.

    Jiang

I'd use at as a general location- around would be much closer, touching the feet.

In some dialects they even use 'put'. (This is non-standard, derived - I imagine - from the Spanish poner la mesa.)
