Today the high sales of popular consumer goods reflect the power of advertising and not the real needs of the society in which they are sold.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

What advertising means to? To some people it is a source of information about the products that helps consumers to match the product to their needs. Some people however, disagree with this argument. In this essay it will be analyzed that how bigger companies play with the minds of customers using the power of advertisement to sell their products.

A few years back few brands were known to people and they used to buy their required goods that were more durable and cheaper. With the massive globalization of media, people are more informed about new brands. Now more products are available that are more or less equal in quality and durability for example, mobile phones from Nokia and Samsung
and that influx of more products and publicity about them are major forces behind their increased demand.

What advertising is selling now is beyond the requirement of durability and quality. It is selling a way of life or an image about life that these brands have created carefully. For example, these advertisements addresses the young people by relating their products to their sense of adventure whereas targeting older customers by linking the products with luxury, comfort and prestige and that has led to a sense of competition among society to buy products that reflects a status symbol and an image of luxurious life. That however, has also led to an increase in prices and only rich people can afford them.

To summarize, it is quite obvious by the above argument that advertisement now a days is no more a source of information but it is manipulating with the minds of people to buy costly goods without real need. Companies by cutting down the amount of money spend on the advertisement can lower the prices of their brands making their products available to all.
