    A question on articles

    Dear teachers,

    I would like to know whether the definite article is needed in the following institutions and places or not as some grammarians say the definite article is generally required preceding hospitals or clinics while some say it is not:

    (the) ABC hospital;
    (the) EFG clinic;
    (the) City Hall;
    (the) Shatin District or (the) Central District.

    Thanks a lot.

    Re: A question on articles

    I would say that it is optional to use the with these words. In conversation, they would probably be dropped but in written language we would use them. I would never say the city hall though. The others can be used with or without the. They have the same meaning/connotation.
