    If he were to

What is the meaning of the sentences with the expression: "if he were to"? Thanks.

    A.

"Speculation on the succession intensified after the 68-year-old Kim suffered a reported stroke in 2008, with Kim's apparently falling health prompting concerns about instability and a possible power struggle in the nuclear-armed country if he were to die without anointing a successor."

    B.

"North Korea agreed to release Gomes if Carter were to come to bring him home."

It means the same as it would if you replaced it with "if he died" and "if Carter came".
It's expressed that way because it's subjunctive; the 'dying without appointing a successor' and 'Carter's coming' are still hypothetical and in the future.
