    Subject Verb Agreement

    Hi teachers,

    To read and to write English (is,are) difficult.

    The correct verb is?

    NOT A TEACHER



    (1) According to Webster's Dictionary of English Usage,

    native speakers prefer the singular when the nouns form

    "a oneness of idea":

    The name and address of the grocery store WAS painted on

    the slats.

    Time and Patience IS necessary.

    I think the time involved and the red tape IS one of the biggest

    problems.

    (2) So probably:

    To read and to write English IS difficult.
