Is this combination acceptable to you in any way? The sun shines firmly. I know shine collocates better with other words but I'd like to know your opinion on this particular set.

No, I wouldn't use firmly.

I might, but only in a very specific context, perhaps something like:

They had predicted rain but the sun shone firmly all day.

I often check the hits too, but it tends to be even more misleading.
