    Is the sentence acceptable?

    Not a teacher.
    I think " Owing to THE sorethroat.." is correct because it refers to the " previous cause", for which he refused...( His sore throat has been defined).
    "Owing to the drought, crops are short".
    "Owing to the rain, the match was cancelled".
