    no sooner,hardly

"Hardly had he gone to bed when somebody knocked on the door."

    OR

"He had hardly gone to bed when somebody knocked the door.''

    OR

Hardly did he go to bed when somebody knocked on the door."(possible?)

Which is more common to put "hardly" at the beginning of a sentence or after "had"?
