    asked Margaret if she was going to buy a new dress in the nearest future.
    2. Dorothy asked Margaret if she would be going to buy a new dress in the nearest future.

    (I put the because it would be possible to fabricate a context where the 2nd would be possible. But if the question is just about her intention to buy, 2 is wrong.)
