    two-time loser/ stir-wise

    Dear teachers,

Would you tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

I dont think youre going to get anywhere, Doug, he warned. That man Ribber is a tough egg. Hes a two-time loser. Hes what is known as stir-wise, and he known enough to keep his mouth shut.

    a two-time looser = iterated prisoner

    stir-wise = an experienced prisoner

He was stir-wise, A tough man to question - he's already been in prison and it was difficult to interrogate.

    Thank you for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V

Youre correct. A two-time loser has been convicted of two felonies. We call him a repeat offender or a recidivist. A stir-wise prisoner "knows all the ropes."
