    To me, both are incorrect, but because of a logic problem, not a grammar problem. Foreshadowing is a technique used by the author but your sentences make it sound like a person must "foreshadow" if they want to understand the book.

    I think you need something like:

    Foreshadowing plays a crucial role in the book.
    To understand the book, it is crucial to notice the foreshadowing.

    Just out of curiosity, what book are you referring to? I am interested to learn how noticing foreshadowing could be so important.
