    point around, down etc

"I thought we were going the right way but we wanted to double check it. I came up to a pedestrian and asked for directions to a restaurant. He pointed us around." Is it OK to use "point around" meaning that he told us that we were supposed to go the oposite way?

Saying "came up to" would be wrong in this context?

Would it be OK to say he pointed us down the street?

    Yes, it means:
He pointed us (to the direction) down the street.
