    What does "as" mean?

Church, as we use the word, refers to all religious institutions, be they Christian, Islamic, Buddhist, Jewish, and so on.

    Dear teacher,

Could you please tell me whether "as we use the word" is an adverbial clause of time? That is, as means when here. Thanks in advance.

    Re: What does "as" mean?

It's defining the way the word "church" is used by the author. It does not refer to time.

"As we use the word" means "this is our definition of the word."

The way they are defining the word "church" is to include any religious institution, not just Christian ones.

    Thank you very much, SoothingDave.

Actually this question was haunting me for a few days after I ran into it on another learning-English forum. Could you please tell me whether I can read it as a nonrestrictive clause like "as we all know" in "as we all know, the earth isn't flat"?

    Million thanks from me.
