    engine

What do you call a vehicle that pulls a railway train? An engine?

Can I say "I'm sitting in a compartment facing the engine"? What would you say, if you were sitting the oposite direction?

Yes, it's called an engine. You can say "with your back to the engine".

It is also called a "locomotive" although not very often these days and in any case "locomotive" is nothing more than a short form of "locomotive engine".
