    should/should have (past)

    1. Yesterday, I should clean up my garden and I did so.

    2. Yesterday, I should clean up my garden but I forgot.

    3. Yesterday, I should have cleaned up my garden and I did so.

    4. Yesterday, I should have cleaned up my garden but I forgot.

Can I use "should" in a past context except in a reported speech?

    Thank you.

    Re: should/should have (past)

    1. Yesterday, I should clean up my garden and I did so.
No. I had to clean... - and then there is no need to add I did so.
    or, possibly
: I was supposed to ... and I did so.

    2. Yesterday, I should clean up my garden but I forgot.
No. I was supposed to clean ... but I forgot
    or: :
I should have cleaned ... but I forgot.

    3. Yesterday, I should have cleaned up my garden and I did so.
No. should have implies that you did not, and it therefore sounds weird if you then say that you did.
So: I had to clean ... - and then there is no need to add I did so.

    4. Yesterday, I should have cleaned up my garden but I forgot.
    Yes

Can I use "should" in a past context except in a reported speech?
The only situation I can think of off-hand in which this is possible is in what I call 'implied reported speech/thought as in:

The phone rang. That would be Julia. He should answer it....

Others may be able to come up with more examples of a past use of should, so please don't take my answer as final.
