    OR

    "I asked him how long he has been working for this firm?"

    Which one is more natural?

    Neither is correct, this is correct: "I asked him how long he had been working for this firm?"

    What if he's still working there and it refers to a fact that is still valid at the moment of speaking? Than back shifting is optional?
