    Do we say an offshore zone, bank account, company?

    I`ve never heard offshore zone. Offshore bank account and company are both used.

    What would you call an area in a country where you pay less texes or you are tax exempt? For example Hong Kong even though it's part of the PRC. It's what "offshore......."?

    Could it be "Free Zone Area"? Actually we have this term in our country. It's used for ares such as Kish Island.

    It depends on your audience. Apparently some of you are familiar with this phrase. If you used it with me, I would have no idea what you meant.
    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    2. Situated in the sea, away from the shore:

    An offshore oilfield.

    3. Foreign, especially of investments, called offshore funds, in companies especially offshore banks based in some self-governing islands tax havens, such as the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas

    So what would you call Hong Kong or Macao it's part of the country but still have a different taxation system? Anything to do with the offshore thing?
