    TVA/ an act of faith

    Dear teachers,

    Would you tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentence?

    Thus, on a spring day, some 38000 of the original 60000 applicants for the jobs went to the school or court-house… to do business with the TVA for the first time. It was an act of faith.

    TVA = Tennessee Valley Authority

    an act of faith = an arduous task

    Thank you for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V

    Re: TVA/ an act of faith

    An act of faith is to do something without assurance or historical record of performance. It is literally to have faith in something or someone.

    In this case people decided to do business with the TVA even though it had no track record as a business because they believed that it would be a good business partner.
