Here are some hints: the English and French revolutions were periods of high scientific progress, coupled with political and philosophical idealism. Literature was fraught with tonnes of naive, utopic works portraying ideal families, perfect harmony and other such boring silliness.

Romanticism then came along when people grew tired of sleeping through dull theatre productions and artists realized people wanted to see real life pain in their art.

See this painting: Delacroix, "Le Naufrage de Don Juan" (1841)

    It's a true story, a devastating shipwreck.

Modernism came some hundred or more years later with a change in the style of narration, from well-organized coherent tales from an omniscient point of view (cf. Dickens, "I shall begin this tale at the beginning. I was born.....") toward a psychologically "authentic" stream of consciousness (cf. Wolfe, Joyce, Faulkner) in which it was hard to follow the narrator but where the narrator's words appeared to form a true simulacrum of a wandering human mind.
