    hit the sauce

    "But hopefully, he'll be able to hit the sheets without hittingthe sauce from now on." What would "hit the sauce" mean=drinking?

    It's a bit of a strange sentence, though- it suggests to me that the person was in the habit of going to bed and drinking, rather than the other way round.
