    infighter/flanks

    Hi

Macklin (a general) was a superb infighter, connected in all the right ways, and a man who excelled at putting other people's necks at risk while protecting his own flanks with skillful dexterity

I'm not sure I understand the highlighted parts. Can you explain to me what they mean?

    Re: infighter/flanks

An infighter is one who is good at participating in arguments or disagreements between people in the same group who are competing for power.

adapted (slightly) from the definition of infighting in the Oxford Adanced Learner's Dictionary.

The sides of an army in a battle, (or sports team in a match). Your infighter could attack in a forward direction, while defending himself from attack from the side.
