I haven't read any books by Tolstoy. I came across this sentence while reading my Oxford dictionary. Then, a thought sprang to my mind. Hang on, shouldn't I say I haven't read any book by Tolstoy to start with? I can only name one book, War and Peace, by Tolstoy, and I am not completely sure whether it was him or someone else who wrote the book.

Strange enough, I have never thought of this in the past fifteen years. At this point, I've started to think the use of plural nouns after any is one of those formations which people can manage without for their lack of practicality.

Many thanks in advance

Richard
