"I'll be back late. I'm going to be hooking up with my friends."OK?

"catch up with" and "hook up with" are not interchangeable in meaning.

Suppose I came on vocation to my home town. I haven't seen my friends for a while. "I'm going to catch up with my friends."

So "hook up with"=meet? "I'm hooking up with my friends tonight."

Yes, but you "catch up" when you tell each other all about what you've been doing. You become current on what's happening in their lives.

You can hook up without talking about those things.

Also, for young urban people, hook up can mean sex with no strings.
