    beat the band

    Dear teachers,

Would you tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentences?

Gray’s conversation was composed of clichés… He never went to bed, but hit the hay; he slept the sleep of the just; if it rained to beat the band. (W. S. Maugham, “The Razor’s Edge”)

That was some feller up the tree twittering to beat the band to let on that he was a squirrel. (S. Leacock, “Frenzied Fiction”)

beat the band = incredibly, beyond all belief, in the extreme, that licks creation

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V

I think that in the extreme pretty much covers it.
