Does "jailhouse" mean the same as "jail" or "prison"?
Except, of course, it refers to the building itself. So it's a substitute for the building, but not the concept. You could say "He was sentenced to three years in prison" but not "three years in the jail house."
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
