    teach me English

He teaches English to me. He teaches me English.
Why don't we put "to" in the second sentence ?

    Suthipong Worasarn,

    (1) He teaches English.

To whom does he teach English?

He teaches English to me. (prepositional phrase)

He teaches me English. (indirect object)

    *****

    (2) She cooks dinner.

For whom does she cook dinner?

She cooks dinner for her family. (prepositional phrase)

She cooks her family dinner. (indirect object)

    *****

    (3) The teacher asked a question.

Of (not: "to") whom did the teacher ask a question?

The teacher asked a question of us.

The teacher asked us a question.

    *****

When you write English, it is maybe better to use the sentence with

the prepositional phrase. It is more formal and elegant. When you

speak, it is fine to use the sentence with the indirect object.

If you have more questions about this, please post them. Many

people would be very happy to help you.
