What is the difference of :

    1) I could not be of help.
    2) I could not help.

    a) Why there is 'be of' in (1)
    b) In what situation we should use 'be of'?

    Re: help

    There's no difference in meaning.

    a) It is more formal.

    b) Use it if you want to sound formal or if you have to write a 100-word paragraph and are stuck on 98 words.
