    invite dissent

    Hi

A lady wanted a certain guy to come to her house and ate supper.

He said: You don't have to do it.

She replied: I know I don't. Her tone did not seem to invite dissent

Does it mean her tone was that saying "no" by the guy wasn't welcome?

It meant that her tone suggested her unwillingness to listen to any form of disagreement with her statement.

I have to say that the comment by He seems a little strange to me. If it was clear that she wanted to invite somebody, then there appears to be no question of having to.
