    bread is buttered on

" John will be there. He's sure as hell coming to the party. He knows which side his bread is buttered on." Is it used in the right context? = he doesn't want to upset John whose friendship he might benefit from?

Yes, if you "know what side your bread is buttered on" it means it means you know where your money (or sometimes other good things) comes from, so you know who to keep a good relationship with.
