Dear Teachers,
We use "Yours faithfully" and "Yours truly" at the end of the official letters or applications. What is the difference between the two?

First of all, "Yours faithfully" and "Yours truly" are complimentary closings, not salutaions. The salutation is the "Dear ------" portion of the letter. :)

"Yours faithfully" is a closing that should ideally be used with a client with whom you have an ongoing relationship, one with whom you've done business with satisfactorily for a period of time. "Yours truly" is a standard closing that is always appropriate.

In BrE we do not use Yours truly in business correspondence.

If we start with Dear Sir/Madam we close with Yours faithfully.
If we start with Dear Mr Smith/Mrs Smith/Miss Smith/Ms Smith/Luke/Emma, we close with Yours sincerely

Then, where to use "Yours truly" in BrE?

Many of us don't use it at all. If we do, then it is in moderately formal letters to a friend.
