    meaning

After returning to the United States, the Greens began to receive requests to tell their son's story and speak about organ donation. "It gradually dawned on us," says Reg,"that we'd been given a life's work."
What is the meaning of the underlined part?
    Thanks

    Re: meaning

They had been given a mission, a purpose, that would last for the rest of their lives.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
