    sterile?

...he believed this kind of research was prohibited by the National Institutes of Health, and ... allow it to proceed would endanger all of the federal grants awarded to Columbia University scientists...He said he thought the procedure was sloppy -- "you don't have this sterile, as you well know" -- and to his mind unethical.

    Isn't "sterile" an ajective?
How can this sentence make sense gramatically?
    What does it mean?

    Re: sterile?

It would make sense if something came after it:
You don't have this sterile and, to my mind unethical, procedure...
Otherwise, it doesn't work for me.

    Re: sterile?

If "procedure" came after it, what would "sterile" mean in this sentence?
Does it mean "Not producing or incapable of producing offspring" or "Free from live bacteria or other microorganisms"?
Neither of them seems to make sense though...

    Re: sterile?

I think it might mean that the procedure doesn't produce anything beneficial, rather than being germ-free. In other words, it isn't ethitical and is rather pointless. (Guesswork)
