    don't understand why

It's an extract from the story about a wedding ceremony.

"It took twenty minutes just to read out all the telegrams. 1)I'd been very careful, and I'd parked my car round the corner, but of course they somehow managed to find out where it was.2) You should have seen what they'd done to it! It was covered with lipstick, and they'd tied cans to the bumper. 3)But anyway, they didn't find out where we were having our honeymoon."

Correct me if I'm wrong. First of all I guess there has been an overuse of the Past Perfect Tense.

1)"I had been/I was very careful and parked my car round the corner, but somehow they managed to find out where it was."

    2) "You should have seen what they did to it! It was covered with lipstick and they tied cans to the bumper."

    3) "Anyway they didn't find out where we were having our honeymoon."

What do you think about the way I've tried to change sentences? Do we use telegrams nowadays?

    Re: don't understand why

1 & 2 there's nothing wrong with the past perfect here IMO- it emphasises the care the person had taken earlier. The past is also fine.
    3 It's less redundant.

Telegrams are still used by some people for some special occasions like weddings:
Telegrams Online - send a telegram in the UK and worldwide (They sent over 2 million in the UK last year)

Does anybody else have a different opinion about the past perfect in the context?
