    watertight

    Dear teachers,

    Would you tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

    Moving into a new home should be a cause for celebration, but only if the deal is legally watertight, as managing partner of Evans Property Services Karina Kheifetz explains.

    The interior and justice ministries spent months very carefully preparing the legal framework for an extension,” Bruederle said in an interview with ARD television in Berlin today. “I’m fully convinced that it is legally watertight.

    Furthermore, if we try to replicate the rigor of official publications, the reader might be misled to believe that what is written here is legally watertight.

    With our wealth of expertise, we can help you draw up a document that is legally watertight and will deliver exactly what you want.

    watertight = irrefutable, unambiguous, well-founded, valid, unable to be disputed or questioned, leaving no possibility of misconstruction or evasion

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V

    Re: watertight

    Correct. Note that one of your definitions should be well-founded, not well-found.

    Re: watertight

    Incidentally, 'watertight' collocates very strongly with 'alibi' (pronounced /'Šlɪbaɪ/) .

    Re: watertight

    Hi BobK,

    Thank you for your kindness.

    watertight alibi = an alibi that seems almost impossible to disprove; a perfect alibi.

    watertight = waterproof, hermetic

    watertight boots ;
    watertight compartment ;
    watertight bulkhead ;
    watertight concrete ;
    watertight cover ;
    watertight joint ;
    watertight motor ;
    watertight stratum ;

    watertight plan
    watertight alibi
    the will is watertight

    to live in a watertight compartment

    Re: watertight

    You've got it. (Buit in your last example, you need an article.)
