    as good as

    Dear teachers,

Would you tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentences?

Mum and Dad were so old-fashioned, so conventional that if he took a girl home, they would consider her visit as good as shouting an engagement from the house-tops.

“And now “says he, “mind I have my blunderbuss, and if you take a step nearer you’re as good as dead.”

Morris as good as told him to mind his own business. (K. S. Prichard, “The Roaring Nineties”)

Ou assaulted him with violence. You’ve as good as broke his leg. (A. J. Cronin, “The Stars Look Down”)

as good as = practically, in effect, almost the same as

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V

Small world again. I found exactly the same words as you use in your interpretation here:
