    Turn himself in

    - My close friend has been a hit and run driver before. But afterwards he turned himself in to the police because he didn't want to be conscience-stricken.

    - Are these sentences grammatical and natural to say?

    Before makes it sound as if he has done this twice. I'd use this:

    My close friend was a hit and run driver but afterwards he turned himself in....
