It can also mean to remove someone from a prominent position ("These secret memos I found will take the Senator down!") or get them terminated from a job ("I am taking you down - when the boss sees this surveillance tape, you will be history!")

I associate "take down" with snipers for some reason. I think it doesn't mean just "kill". It has a narrower meaning to me. Do you agree?
