i' d like to know the difference between FOR and TO in these sentences

I took a train FOR /TO London

I took a bus FOR/TO the town center

There is no difference in meaning, both are correct.

Practically speaking, there is little difference.

'I took the train to London' and 'I took a bus to the town centre' means you went all the way there.

But if you don't go all the way, you might say 'I took the train for London and got off at Watford', and 'I took a bus for the town centre and got off at Central Avenue'.
