    better vs rather

I would like to see the difference:

I automatically click on the right option but a question aroused why not to use "better"

" .. he University of Manchester study used a powerful supercomputer to calculate the running speeds of five meat-eating dinosaurs and used data taken 8) __________ from dinosaur fossils, 9) rather (why not better?) than referring to previous work on modern animals...."

I was asked why better cannot be used and I did know how to answer as rather was the only option for me

    Thanks for your advice.

In your text "rather than" means "instead of", "better" is not appropriate.
