    subject-verb agreement

What is the proper subject-verb agreement in the following sentence?

The entirety of his elbow, wrist and hand was/were prepped for surgery.

Is the subject "the entirety (of his lower arm)" which was prepped or "the entirety (of the parts of his lower arm) which were prepped". Are the individual parts a red herring for me and it is just "The entirety was prepped"?

    "Was", with or without herring.
