    Appreciate

    Hi,

This might seem a little like the "realize" thread. But it's problematic for me.
How is the usage of "appreciate" different from "thank". For example, are the following sentences wrong, why and how can they be corrected:

    "We can't appreciate our parents."

    "We should appreciate our teachers."

Both of your sentences are grammatically correct, but in neither case does "appreciate" mean "thank".

    So, what do they mean?

    Re: Appreciate

I looked up 'appreciate' in a dictionary.

'recognize the value or significance of.'
    (Word Reference Dictionary)

You could have done the same.

    Re: Appreciate

I could know I could. There are lots of dictionaries online. And I have at least four computer dictionaries installed on my computer. The problem is "appreciate" has several meanings and I never know which one is meant. I: don't seem to grasp the meaning and usage of "appreciate.

There was another word, I had this problem with: "aspect". No matter, how many definitions, synonyms or equivalents I read for it, I didn't understand it. It took a while for this word to be digested into my system.

    Thanks anyway.
