Hey,

I was just wondering what that Rules are. Because I usually place a comma before I quote a sentence but opening a Newspaper today I seemed to notice most don’t. Most of my Essay is in my own paraphrasing but at times I need to use direct quotes from the Article. So my sentences lead right into the quotes.

Would I need to place a comma? Example:

(…from other tissues, “such as bone…)

In one part I refer to the Engineers in my paraphrasing so no comma is necessary. Is that correct?

Thanks for any Help.

Styles differ. Here's what I do, and no one's complained.
If the sentences follows on logically, I might not use a comma: They were able to extract DNA from "other tissues such as bone and cartilage" (Smith, 2009).
Otherwise, I'd use a comma.

Sometimes, journalists will try to fit as much as possible in the little space they are given. This occurs more often in physical rather than online newspapers.

Thank You.

I have a follow up Question. When Citing In Text after a Quote do you do it like:

such as bone marrow and skeletal muscle. (Author 1 and Author 2, 2004).

or

such as bone marrow and skeletal muscle." (Author 1 and Author 2, 2004).

Use the second version.

You really need to download a style guide, either MLA, APA, Harvard.
Many Universities print these and le you download them.

I lack the time right now to do just that. I might when I have more Free time available. I have already looked at MLA and I was confident I knew the rules of MLA but today I had to re-think that.

The Forum is handy thats why I asked. A collective of Language Instructors is quicker than a 400 page manual.
