    where? Why not when?

    Dear all,

Why is "where" used here instead of "when"?

    Thanks in advance.

One of the challenges in a consumer-driven economy is to convince people that they need to keep consuming. Thatís where advertising comes in, and in the 1920s, it became both an art and a science.

    'When' is also acceptable here.

    Thanks.

Is there any difference between them?

I am also eager to know the answer to Eartha's question.

    Thank you

    Re: where? Why not when?

'Where', rather than 'when', is the natural choice of relative when we are referring to a case or situation. That's where advertising comes in effectively refers to the case/situation in which advertising assumes an important role.

    In other words:

    (1) That's (a situation) where advertising comes in.

    • Advertising comes into play (in a situation) where you need to convince people that they need to keep consuming.
    (2) That's (a time) when advertising comes in.

    • Advertising comes into play (at a time) when you need to convince people that they need to keep consuming.

Both work (as Johnson_F points out in Post #2). Either 'where' or 'when' is possible.

I agree. It's no surprise that the writer used "where".
