    -ing spelling

    hi everyone
    i have a question
    why don't double the last letter when adding -ing
    in words like open, listen
    thank you

    Good question.
    The easiest way to understand would be to consider the words:
    hope -> hoping
    &
    hop -> hopping.
    Perhaps you can see the answer for yourself?
