    Sentence structure

Please help me with this sentence.

I am fine. How about you?

I am fine. How are you?

Is asking "how about you" unprofessional?

    Re: Sentence structure

I think no one has answered because we don't have a better answer than "it just is."

My guess is that we have a formula for formal interactions.
    Good morning, Chris.
Good morning, Pat. How are you?
I'm fine, thank you. How are you?
    Fine as well, thank you.

The more you deviate from this, the less formal.

    Morning, Chris.
    Morning, Pat. How are you?
    Find, thanks. How about you?
    Great, thanks.

    Howdy, Chris.
    What's up, Pat?
    Not much. You?
    It's all good here.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
